Fablehaven

I liked Fablehaven. I did not love it. It was fine. Don’t get me wrong; it had a lot of interesting ideas. I loved the idea of having preserves for magical creatures so they didn’t go extinct. I loved the idea that there are extremists who want to let chaos into the world and have survival of the fittest. However, I did not love Seth, and I did not love the pacing.

So here is my issue with Seth. He never listens. I get that he is an adventurous boy, but Brandon Mull takes it to an extreme I feel is unrealistic. Every problem they have would not have happened if Seth hadn’t done something stupid. After the second time, it just feels like the author doesn’t have any other ideas of how to start a conflict. To be fair, Seth does begin to learn some lessons by the end of the book, but from my experience, those same lessons should have been learned earlier. (Watch the YouTube video below for my in-depth, full-of-spoilers review for more information on why I feel this way.) Brandon Mull sets up the possibility of conflict from other sources, but he doesn’t capitalize on it. Although I’ve only read the first book, so maybe those set-ups are for something later in the series.

Overall, I do think it is a great read for actual 12-14-year-olds, which I’m pretty sure are the intended audience. I also feel it has great potential to be a fantastic series. I guess time will tell as I read the rest. My advice is if you’re looking for a book for your kids or students, by all means, get this one. If you’re an adult who likes YA, maybe it’s okay to skip it.

If you want to buy it, you can find it here.

Should I have read this book years ago? Probably. Did I? No. The Giver is one of those books that has been on my list to read for years, but I never got around to doing it – until now. Man, was I missing out. The Giver is about a boy named Jonas who lives…

Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief

Disclaimer: In Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, they use the term “gods” as a swear word, but since they specifically refer to the Greek gods, I did not feel it fell under the category of a swear word for my grading system. I LOVE this book and every book in the Percy Jackson series….

Fablehaven Grip of the Shadow Plague

So I started this series because my niece and nephew suggested it. After the first book, I was wondering if this was a series I really wanted to finish. After the second, I decided it was probably worth finishing. This third book, Grip of the Shadow Plague, made me so happy I continued this series….

I’m a bit ashamed to admit that this is my first Terry Pratchett book. I have read Good Omens, but since both Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman wrote that book, I don’t really count it as reading a Terry Pratchet book. As a fantasy lover, for years, I have had people suggest I read Terry…

    Messenger by Lois Lowry

Lois Lowry is killing me with these open endings! Don’t get me wrong I have enjoyed every book in this series so far, but they all feel like they end in the middle of the story, not the end. It’s incredibly frustrating and Messenger follows that same pattern. I never realized how much I…

  1. Thanks for your feedback!! I agree that it’s true that Seth causes all the problems, but I still like his character overall. I’ve read all the books and he gets better but he still acts the same. I love the series even with Seth but it’s fun to hear a different perspective!!

  2. I loved Fablehaven. I agree, Seth is super annoying in this book, but he starts to grow into his character as the series continues and even more so in the Dragonwatch series.
