Otherwise Engaged
If you like Regency-era romances, then you’ll probably like Otherwise Engaged. Like many Jane Austen-style books, this is a love story. There is no violence, and no use of current swear words. However, it is entirely dedicated to the romance between the main characters.
Otherwise Engaged follows Rebecca Rowley as she tries to navigate her secret engagement (a huge taboo for the time period) and her friendship with her new neighbor, the dashing Lieutenant Nicholas Avery. This book is a fun read, especially if you like romance. The story is straightforward. So don’t read this if you want a surprising storyline. The story ends exactly how you would imagine. However, the characters are interesting, and the growth of Rebecca’s and Nicholas’s relationship is natural and exciting.
The two main characters complement each other well. They share mutual respect and friendship long before they develop romantic feelings for each other. They are open and honest and, for the most part, have excellent communication. Many romance novels use unrealistic miscommunications to cause a rift between the love interests. However, the miscommunication in this instance feels warranted.
If you’re looking for a cute romance, I say give Otherwise Engaged a chance. Because the entire story revolves around a romance, I have rated it a C for clearly 16. However, none of the romance is explicit. A few kisses were described and much talk of relationships, but nothing the average 16-year-old wouldn’t know.
